The Great Eastern Cutlery Tidioute #43 Oregon Trapper pocket knife is is a large knife that features a single blade. It is a traditionally styled pocket knife with great eye appeal. It's superior quality and robust build means you can depend on it for years of use and its great looks will give you a sense of satisfaction every time you use it. The knife is large enough for some serious work yet it carries very nicely. This quality made pocket knife has a price making it a great value for your hard earned dollar. Made with pride in Titusville, PA. We are an authorized Great Eastern Cutlery Dealer and purchased this new knife direct from them.

The Blade(s):

This #43 Oregon Pattern pocket knife features a large clip point blade made from 1095 steel and it has a satin finish. The blade has a cutting edge of 3.125", a nail nick for opening and features a half stop position. There is a circle with three "P" letters inside the circle which stands for "Pattern Production Premier" on the right side of the blade since the Tidioute run is the first run for the #43 pattern. The left side of the blade features a graphic of a beaver and the words "BEAVER TAIL".

The Handle Construction:

The handle length is 4.187" and provides a solid four finger hold. A polished Nickel Silver Bolster adorns the handle. The knifes great looks is accented by a Nickel Silver Inlay Shield in the shape of a beaver. The handle scales are Jigged Brazilian Cherry wood and the liners and pins are brass. There is a brass lanyard tube in the handle/frame. The handle scale edges are rounded and flush with the outside perimeter making the knife more comfortable to hold.

I have three GEC 43s now, and the beaver tail I received has the snappiest action of all three. I absolutely love the feel of the jigged cherry wood, and the fit and finish is what you’d expect from GEC, near perfect. Plus, the beaver shield is just great.

I really thought this was going to sit on display with my cocobolo 43, and that the micarta was going to end up as my user, but this one somehow jumps into my pocket every morning.

I highly recommend this knife.

The GEC #43 is disappointing. The walk and talk of the Tidioute Beaver Tail is slow due to an unusually weak backspring. The overall build quality is fine, including the cherry wood jigging. Unfortunately, the backspring tension is greatly reduced compared to previous offerings of similar models (#23, #43, #73); so much so, in fact, that it should be considered a factory second. As a practical use folder, the Beaver Tail is more than adequate.
