The ESEE-5 is "built like a tank" for dependable service & a lifetime of use. Boasting a 1/4" thick blade, and sharpened pointed pommel, this 16 oz knife is ready for serious combat environments and used extensively by pilots of the US Air Force. It was designed by military SERE instructors as a hard-use, Survival, Escape and Evasion, downed pilots knife. The blade is "substantial" to say the least.
Feedback from a SERE instructor after testing a production model of the ESEE-5:
"Just got back and I am impressed. The knife is everything that we're looking for. Tough, durable, practical, affordable, and useful. I can't tell you how many fires that I started with the help of the ESEE-5 and it was a great trip to try out a knife. The weather was unseasonably cold, mostly in the teens but sometimes in the negatives. My friend and I were starting a fire for some cold students and he was bashing his (manufacturer's name removed) through some sections of a downed tree it broke right at the handle, like most * Bolt Knives and (manufacturer's name removed) seem to do. I don't know if it was the cold weather, the perfect angle, or something else but it was a brand new (manufacturer's name removed) and it broke right in half. At the same time I was beating the daylights out of the ESEE-5 hoping to bend, break, or at the very least damage the paint job. I failed to do any of these things and my friend became more and more interested in the ESEE-5 as I found more and more things that I like about it. Thanks again for the great knife!"
* "Bolt Knives" are knives built with reduced tangs to accommodate handles. Usually these knives have a pommel cap that is threaded or riveted in place. These reduced tang knives will not accept a lot of prying. Examples of this are standard issue pilot's survival knives.

This ESEE Knife is made from high carbon 1095 steel. And while 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for - especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user's responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor such as Sentry Solutions MARINE TUF-CLOTH.
WARRANTY AND CONSTRUCTION INFO:
Esee knives are not considered "high production" due to the care that is taken during the manufacturing process. After the steel is laser cut to size, the knives are heat treated (**see note below). Both Micarta and G-10 handle slabs are profiled and radiused on a CNC milling machine, and each set of handles are matched and fitted to a corresponding knife blank. The reason for this is during the laser cutting process there is a certain amount of tolerance, so one knife may be a few thousanths of an inch bigger (or smaller) than the next. By marrying a set of handles to a blank throughout the manufacturing process, the user ends up with a finely fitted knife. The handles slabs are held in place with three screws fastened with Loctite into a barrel nut. When the handles are assembled, a fiber liner is placed between the Micarta or G-10 slab and tang of the knife. The partially serrated knives are made by milling each serration individually with a 3/8" end mill. Unlike a lot of serrations, these are designed to easily cut through fabrics, rope and other flexible materials.
Partially serrated blades are easily sharpened by honing with a flat hone across them in the same manner as you would hone the plain edge. The textured powder coat we use on Esee knives is a special powder that has an increased amount of resistance to wear and corrosion, while maintaining a smoother feel than oxide or phosphate coatings.
**All ESEE Knives now feature a Rowen Manufacturing heat treat recipe that allows for hardening the blade completely to 57 Rc. while still maintaining flexibility.
No Questions Asked Warranty, from ESEE Knives: "If you screw it up, break it, or cut it in two with a cutting torch, send it back and we'll replace it. Warranty is transferable. In other words, we warranty the knife no matter how many times it's been traded, sold or given away. We don't ask for a sales receipt, date of purchase or where you bought the knife - No fine print and no hassles. We do not warranty against rust or normal wear and tear.
A lot of folks have asked us (ESEE Knives) how we can stay in business offering such great customer service and warranty protection.
